K-Lite Codec Pack FAQ

This FAQ covers the most common questions about installation, playback issues, configuration, subtitles, and troubleshooting. It is designed for both new and experienced users.

If you cannot find what you need here, the support forum has detailed discussions and guidance from experienced users.

General

What are codecs?

Codecs are software components that decode or encode media formats so players can read different file types. The pack includes codecs for many popular formats.

Installation

Do I need to uninstall the old version first?

No. The installer updates existing installations. Close any media players before running the update.

Is silent or unattended installation supported?

Yes. Command-line parameters allow fully unattended deployments for IT environments.

Is there an uninstaller?

Yes. The uninstaller removes all pack components and registry entries. You can find it in Windows "Programs and Features".

Playback Issues

A video file will not play

Make sure Standard or Full is installed. If the issue persists, try the file in MPC-HC to obtain better diagnostic messages.

Video stutters or is not smooth

Check hardware acceleration settings and ensure drivers are up to date. You can also try a different renderer such as MadVR (Full edition).

Audio and video are out of sync

Adjust the audio delay in MPC-HC or tweak decoder settings. A different splitter may also help.

Configuration

Where can I configure component options?

Use the Codec Tweak Tool to access settings and diagnostics. Some components also expose settings in Control Panel or the system tray.

How do I switch audio tracks or subtitles?

In MPC-HC, use Play → Audio → Audio Track or Play → Subtitles → Subtitle Track. Keyboard shortcuts are also available.

Media Player Classic

How can I see which filters MPC-HC uses?

Open Play → Filters in MPC-HC or press Ctrl+3 to view active filters and codecs.

No video displays when playing a DVD

DVD playback depends on proper navigation support and renderer settings. Update your graphics drivers and review the renderer selection in MPC-HC.

Subtitles

How can subtitles load automatically?

Ensure subtitle files share the same filename as the video (different extension). Configure subtitle behavior in DirectVobSub or MPC-HC settings.

Subtitles do not appear

Verify DirectVobSub is installed and enabled. Confirm the subtitle format is supported (SRT, ASS, SSA, SUB, etc.).

Troubleshooting

How can I reset configuration to defaults?

The Codec Tweak Tool includes reset options for LAV Filters, DirectVobSub, and other components.
